Personal Side Interviews

The Personal Side of Melanie Kern-Favilla

April 13, 2018

Melanie Kern-Favilla is an award-winning photographer and KelbyOne instructor. You may also recognize her as the winner of the second Gallery at KelbyOne contest with her beautiful floral work. In her other life, she is a train engineer with the Long Island Railroad, wife, lover of dogs and big weather (the kind that brings tornadoes). If you’d like to see what a life of pushing past your fears looks like, look no further, this lady is the real deal. I hope you’ll take the time to watch Melanie tell her full story here, it’s exciting, inspiring, reassuring and calming all at the same time. Who wouldn’t want to watch that? 😉

Thank you, Melanie!

KelbyOne—an Ecosystem of Opportunity—I Like That About Us

December 1, 2017

You’ll have to bear with me a minute here because I’m so excited and happy that I just want to say it, to share it. The woman above is Melanie Kern-Favilla. You may recognize her as a Gallery at KelbyOne winner. Melanie is a fantastic photographer, KelbyOne member, and train engineer. Melanie will also soon be a KelbyOne instructor, and we can’t wait. There are many reasons for us/me to be excited about this but let me explain why I’m particularly excited.

You see, Melanie (and what Melanie represents in this case) makes me happy because she is the result of our ecosystem of opportunity. That ecosystem changed the question for our business from “How do we accomplish more?” to “How can we help our members accomplish more?” And that is a question that is fun to answer every day. For Melanie that meant we opened a door and she walked through it. By entering her images in our gallery contest not only did she win the competition but now a worldwide audience knows her name and her work. She’s been featured on the cover of our magazine, “Photoshop User” which led members from all over the world to ask for Melanie to share her techniques on KelbyOne. Full circle—I love it!

Do you want to know the best part about all of this? She’s not alone—not by a long shot. A few others that have had similar experiences (that include speaking at our national conference Photoshop World) are Steve HansonKaylee Greer, and Dave Clayton.  My hope, my joy, my excitement about the future are the names of those members that will be added to this list. KelbyOne is a business, yes, but it is also our life’s work and our passion, and it makes us happy when it works like this. Thank you for letting me share.

Have a great weekend everyone!

“Everything you can imagine is real.” ― Pablo Picasso

July 22, 2017

This is Melanie Kern-Favilla, a talented artist, and photographer. She also happens to be a train engineer on the Long Island Rail Road and a KelbyOne.com member. Melanie entered and won our international member competition and, last night had her work featured in a solo gallery show at The Gallery at KelbyOne. Melanie is the real deal, the genuine article and an all around awesome person. I like that about her, and I couldn’t be happier for her. Congratulations, Melanie, you rock! Thank you for being such an inspiration to us all. 🙂

And you see that encourager standing next to her? That’s her husband, Dave. Dave encouraged her to enter, ensured her that she’d make the final round and then on announcement day was racing home and on the phone telling her she’d better be watching The Grid (Kelby TV) because she was “Going to win!” I like that about him. Dave, you rock! Don’t ever stop being the power of the other because, well, it’s a wonderful thing to be. 🙂

Thank you to everyone at KelbyOne that makes this event happen each time. From the artist selection process to installation, to video, graphics, marketing, member services, web, IT, our wonderful host for the evening, Mr. Larry Becker, right down to the selection and placement of the wine and cheese there isn’t a single person who isn’t involved. Heck, I even saw our book team taking promotional shots last night. Hahaha! We’re all excited for our members and this opportunity for them, so I want to thank our team, from the bottom of my heart, it means a lot to me.

Members chatting with Melanie about her work.

Everyone wanted Anthony Scott (voted to have the “Best Photographer Stance Game”) to take their photo at the gallery step and repeat backdrop. Hahaha!

Thank you to everyone that came and helped Melanie, and all of us at KelbyOne and the whole membership celebrate — can’t wait until next time!
